JBA observes Fire Prevention Week
JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. — Joint Base Andrews Fire and Emergency Services observed national Fire Prevention Week Oct. 5th through 10th with installation-wide outreach and public events for service members, families, civilian employees and community partners.
This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focused on safe charging practices for lithium-ion battery-powered devices.
“This year’s primary purpose focused on educating the JBA community on the critical importance of safe battery charging, aligning with national safety standards to proactively safeguard our homes and work centers,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Nathaniel Bacorn, 316th Civil Engineer Squadron assistant chief of operations.
During outreach events, squadron firefighters discussed safe charging practices with community members at locations throughout JBA.
“Our firefighters shared critical guidance emphasizing that community members should use manufacturer-approved charging cords and charge devices strictly on hard, non-combustible surfaces rather than beds or couches,” Bacorn said.
Throughout the week, firefighters interacted with the youth, leading children through an interactive obstacle course at the JBA youth center.
“Engaging JBA’s youth and the broader community is vital because fire prevention is a shared responsibility that relies on every military family member looking out for one another,” said Jon Hollen, 316th Civil Engineer Squadron lead fire inspector. “By teaching our children early, we build a resilient, safety-minded generation that helps ensure the security and readiness of our entire base.”
The observance concluded with a parade through base housing and a fall festival at Liberty Park.
“It was incredibly rewarding to see base families interact with Sparky the Fire Dog and our firefighters, reinforcing safety principles in an exciting, memorable environment,” Hollen said.
Dorian Dillon, 316th Civil Engineer Squadron fire chief, encouraged residents to follow fire safety practices year-round.
“The most important message we want our JBA community to keep in mind is that fire safety is a continuous, year-round commitment that directly protects our mission and loved ones,” Dillon said. “Always remember to ‘Charge into Fire Safety’ by remaining vigilant with your daily electronics, testing your smoke alarms monthly and practicing your escape plans regularly.”
